I was so excited when Pantone announced Greenery as their colour of the year because I am truly a big green fan. So as much as I would love to bring you a garden update, I am going to rather talk about indoor plants, leaves and all things greenery. The sad reality is that at the moment my garden is a dry wasteland where only lizards can survive. I am busy installing a grey water system – it’s actually ridiculous that I haven’t done this a long time ago – but until I have that in place, I am destined to focus my green fingers on indoor plants.
And lucky for me, indoor plants and leaves are so SUPER on trend at the moment that I am happy to while away my time indoors until the rain has come. Let’s just first look at what exactly greenery is, because let’s face it, until a couple of months ago, no-one even knew that this was a colour.
Greenery is a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew. Illustrative of flourishing foliage and the lushness of the great outdoors, the fortifying attributes of Greenery signals consumers to take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate. A life-affirming shade, Greenery is also emblematic of the pursuit of personal passions and vitality.

Now that we know what it is, let’s look at 5 easy ways to bring the green trend into your home.
1. Leaves
This is really the easiest way to get all those wonderful tropical vibes going in your home. Just put some large banana or delicious monster leaves in a glass vase and you’re good to go! I am always amazed at how long they last as well – I always have a delicious monster leaf on a little table in my dining room and I probably cut a new one only every 2 months or so. Banana leaves and Strelitzia leaves also work equally well.
2. Prints
You are seriously spoiled for choice when it comes to leafy prints at the moment.
Everything from wildly wonderful Ashford Tropics from Hertex to this beautiful charcoal leaf wallpaper I found on Etsy. I am so in love with this one in fact that I’m seriously considering redoing my bedroom. Isn’t it just gorgeous?!?
3. Create a focal wall
Paint has to be the easiest way to quickly add colour and personality to a room – or even an outside wall! Greenery will make an entire room look fresh and vibrant – just what you need when the summer is too hot or the winter is too long!
4. Potted and hanging
Kokedama are all the rage at the moment so don’t be shy to string them up. But any indoor plant will really just add to your living room. Indoor plants have an ability to make a room look fresh and healthy. Ask you local nursery for suggestions on low-maintenance indoor greens. And if you are feeling brave, get a gorgeous orchid.
5. Accessorize
Nothing like a couple of scatters, a throw or 2 and a new lampshade to quickly update a room. This mood board below just makes we want to go shopping!
Happy decorating!

Where does one just reach out for banana leaves? Everything is gorgeous. I could breathe better while reading this. Thanks!
Hi Joette,
I have them growing in my garden 😉 But I do believe Woolies sells them as well now!
