If you are in the mood to simplify Christmas this year, opt for a picnic! In South Africa we have the perfect weather and landscapes to take it outdoors.
I have found some super inspirational pictures and ideas and will definitely be celebrating Christmas in a paired down picnic fashion this year. Sparkling wine and tapas here we come!
It’s going to be a long night
Take table tops or even old doors and put them on plastic crates to create a long love-table. Layer different rugs around it and add scatter cushions here and there for your guests to sit on. Finish it off with fresh flowers from the garden combined with herbs and lots of fairy lights and tea candles to take you into the night.

Keep it simple
Remember to keep the menu simple and have all utensils on hand that will be required to tuck in. I love these little bags with serviette, wooden cutlery and the essential salt and pepper. Take inspiration from your surroundings and make wreaths from the vegetation on hand. Simply shape a piece of wire into a heart or circle and populate with olive branches. Penny gum also works great and is readily available.

Barefoot Christmas
Use a piece of ticking fabric as your picnic blanket – it adds a comfortable, mattressy feel to the setting. Hang up strips of different colored fabric in the trees as a festive element.

If you go out to the woods today …
Use oversize geometric candle holders on your table and also scattered around the picnic setting to give off a soft warm glow as the sun sets. Fairy lights are a great way to light up the path to and from the area. Wrap them around trees as a new take on a Christmas tree.
Location location location
Set up your picnic area in the prettiest place you can find. You also don’t have to stick to the traditional blanket on the ground like we have shown in the pictures above. Take a small table or even a few crates and use them as a table surface. It’s important that your guests are comfortable and in total awe of the stunning setting you have chosen.
Happy styling,
