DIY Pot Rest with a Tile Stamp

I received the beautifully hand-painted pot rest featured above from my sister after a trip to Turkey. The delicate patterns inspired me to start playing around. And for those of you who have been visiting us for a while, you’ll know that I absolutely LOVE stamps. I have stamped walls, floors, a staircase, and even a stunning tiled splashback. While we were testing said splashback with a tile stamp, a few tiles came into being in the process. Instead of throwing them away, we were trying to figure out what we could use these single tiles for. So far, I have come up with:

  1. Pot rest
  2. Spoon rest
  3. Coasters (for smaller tiles)
  4. Soap tray

I’d love to hear your ideas, so please comment below!

I should also point out that this is not a tile stamp per se. Cling stamps are originally intended for scrapbooking, but you can clearly use them for a lot of other things too. Any large-scale stamp or wooden block print will work. There are so many different designs to choose from on Amazon as well.

While this is a very quick and simple DIY, correct preparation will ensure that you have a pretty little tile for a long time. The tiles that I did in my shower (yes, inside a shower we use every day), lasted for more than 6 years! I have detailed the preparation in that post, so please refer to it before you start. The rest is really simple!

You will need:

  • Tile(s)
  • A stamp that matches the size of the tile
  • Tile primer
  • Paint (I used chalk paint, but any washable interior wall paint will do)
  • A universal sealer is optional but is likely to protect your handiwork for longer.

Tile Stamp Method:

Just follow along with the images below, making sure to print onto dry primed tiles. And then once everything is dry, you can seal it.

Scissors are optional, but I found that they really helped me to lift the tile stamp after printing.

Play around with colours and different patterns to create a beautiful, original gift for yourself or someone else.

Stack and tie them for a lovely little housewarming or birthday gift.

Happy printing – and remember to let me know what else you could use these for.
